In periodization training, one of the key points is that there’s a time and place for every workout. There’s a story about Arthur Lydiard at the 1964 Olympics to illustrate this. A talented Canadian runner was watching Lydiard’s athletes run an interval workout and a day later, he decided to run the same workout himself. When asked by a reporter what Lydiard thought about the young Canadians’ workout he responded, “I think it’s the last nail in his coffin.”

Missouri State cross country has released its schedule for the 2010 season. The schedule features high levels of competition from across the Midwest. The Bears are also hosting their own meet in the Greater Springfield Sports Commission Richard Clark Invitational.

It is 6:30 in the morning, on an overcast Saturday morning, in Kansas City, Missouri. Beth Salinger, race director of the 37th Hospital Hill, and her team, were hard at work on the last minute preparations for the event. The race, the most venerable event in the Kansas City running scene, features a 5k, 10k and one of the toughest half marathons in the country.

NORMAL, Ill. - The sprint group's solid showing on the final day of the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships' was not enough to keep the Track and Field Bears in the MVC's top half, as the squad finished sixth and out of the top four for only the second time in head coach Ronald Boyce's 14 seasons.

We have covered many training techniques to help prepare you for the 37th annual Hospital Hill Run. Long slow runs, fartleks, hills, cross training and cut back weeks are all important components of training. One often-overlooked aspect of training for an endurance event is the mental side of things. Strong mental preparation can change a good day to a great day.

Pacing is important because it helps you to learn how fast you can comfortably finish a race. Your pace for the 5K distance may be faster than for a half marathon or marathon distance.

Emily Sisson, the reigning Missouri Class 4 1,600- and 3,200-meter state champion, will not be defending her titles.

The Parkway Central senior is not injured — far from it. And she is still in good standing with her school and her team. But a decision she made to run outside of an MSHSAA-sanctioned event meant she had to give up her final high school track season.
