By switching to the fall, the race attracted twice as many runners--and twice as much money for its charity partner, Special Olympics. Runners, swimmers, gymnasts, etc., toil in virtual anonymity for the bulk of those 4 years, training for that one day, that one chance to fulfill a dream and qualify for the United States Olympic Team, the greatest such team in the world.
