Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon introduces Kids Marathon

08/27/2008 - 13:59

August 27, 2008 from press release (KANSAS CITY, MO) The Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon is taking an active approach to fighting childhood obesity and promoting health and fitness among children by hosting the 1st annual Kids Marathon. This year, children from kindergarten to sixth grade will compete in The Kansas City Kids Marathon, in conjunction with the Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon on October 18, 2008. The children will log every mile they complete up to 25 miles prior to the race, and run the remaining 1.2 miles on race day. Accomplishing one mile at a time is a reasonable pace for this age group and makes the marathon both fun and safe for their growing bodies, according to Children's Mercy Hospitals & Clinics Weight Management Services, which is the beneficiary of the Kids Marathon. Children's Mercy Hospital assisted the marathon in creating training and nutrition tips that will be distributed to all those students participating in the program.

Dr. Sarah Hampl, medical director of Weight Management Services for Children's Mercy Hospital, said that it's important to help children to find a way to exercise that is both fun and rewarding. "This will help them to stay motivated and maintain a healthy lifestyle for years to come," said Hampl.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "More than 12.5 million children‹17.1 percent of children and adolescents 2 to 19 years of ago‹are overweight in the U.S."

Mileage tracking is done on the 'honor system' and is kept track of by the child and his or her parent/teacher/guardian on the mileage chart provided from the marathon. The Kids Marathon, which launched in all Kansas City metro school districts this past spring, currently has 91 participants registered. The KC Kids Marathon's final 1.2 mile leg begins October 18
at 8 a.m., and finishes in the Freight House District.
