Track and Field Bears Set for 2010 Season Opener

01/07/2010 - 15:25

The track and field team begins its 2010 indoor season this Friday, Jan. 8, as it travels to Columbia, Mo., and the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse for the 24th annual Missouri Invitational.

The Bears will face a field comprising Missouri, Central Methodist, Lincoln, Lindenwood, Missouri Baptist, Saint Louis and SIU-Edwardsville. As with any new seasons, the Bears and head coach Ronald Boyce are ready to get underway.

“We are looking forward to getting started,” Boyce said. “Friday will come along and we’ll be excited because it is time to go.”

The meet will feature mainly sprint and field competitions, with only three distance runners competing for the Bears. The distance field will open up at the Bears next meet, the Eastern Illinois University Mega Meet, Jan. 23.

It will be the third-straight year the Invitational serves as the Bears opener. At last season’s meet, MSU runners accrued 17 top-ten finishes, including four event wins and three runner-up places. But it is not the high finishes on which coach Boyce is focused.

“We’ve got some young kids and we need to get in there and have a good showing,” Boyce said. “I am not really concerned about wins and losses right now, more so than we are competing and competing well.”

The first event is scheduled to start at noon. For those interested in attending the meet, admission is $4 and parking is available on the east side of the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse. Additionally, live stats and times will be available at
