Track and Field Bears Return to Action at the Iowa State Classic

02/12/2010 - 09:55

A rested Track and Field Bears squad will face their final tune-up before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, this weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. The meet will take off Friday afternoon and conclude Saturday, the 13th, night.

Six teams ranked in the top 50 nationally will be among the roughly 30 teams on display, but it is the familiar foes that have the Bears interested and motivated.

"We're going to see everyone from the MVC meet, so it is our pre-championship meet, of sorts," head coach Ron Boyce said. "Like everyone from the conference, we will focus on what every other MVC schools doing. We will get a chance to see them, we will get a chance to match up with them and we will get a chance to have a feel for where we're going to be, what we are going to do in two weeks (at the MVC Championships)."

It will be the Bears first meet since the Indiana Relays Jan. 29-30, where they won two events and set several personal bests. The Classic will also give MSU a chance to improve upon its USTFCCCA Midwest Region 19th Team Ranking.

The Bears will count on Terry Phillips (So., Kansas City, Mo.), Mareneika Goffe (Sr., Montego Bay, Jamaica), Jeláni Kelly (So., St. Louis, Mo.), Rashida Allen (Jr., Montego Bay, Jamaica) and others to do just that.

Phillips has two event wins this season, as well as the top MVC times in the mile (4:55.41) and the 3,000-meter runs (9:38.44). Her 3,000-meter time at the Indiana Relays beat her personal best by more than 10 seconds and placed her third on Missouri State's all-time performer list for the event.

Goffe is looking for her fourth high jump win in as many meets, while Kelly has earned four top-five finishes this season between the shot put and the weight throw.

Allen has excelled in the 200-meter dash, winning the event at the Eastern Illinois University Mega Meet and placing seventh at the Indiana Relays event's invitational. Her 25.26 seconds finish at the Relays is the fastest time of any Bear this season, and the fourth-fastest of any MVC runner.

Live stats will be available all weekend through the track and field schedule page on and will be broadcasting live footage from the Classic.
