Bears Track and Field Breaks Conference Record at MVC Championships‏

Cedar Falls, Iowa – The Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships began today on the campus of Northern Iowa. Missouri State athletes broke a conference meet record and advanced nine to tomorrow’s finals. The Bears sit in fourth place with 26 points after five scored events on the first day.

The Bears distance medley relay team of Staci Nelson, Kindra Perkins, Asher Kyger and Pasca Cheruiyot broke the Missouri Valley Conference meet record with a time of 11:42.69. They won the event and scored 10 points for Missouri State.

In the 5,000-meter run finals, the Bears placed three runners in the top-eight. Pasca Cheruiyot finished second with a time of 16:33.50, breaking the meet record in the process. Terry Phillips was the next runner across the finish line, placing third with a time of 17:19.00. Jamie Vest was the final Bear in the top-eight, finishing eighth at 17:43.44.

Leander Ernest finished with the fastest time in both the 200- and 400-meter run preliminaries. She advances to the finals along with teammate Rashida Allen in the 200-meter run. Allen finished with the fourth-fastest time in the event at 25.02 seconds. Yaneika Malcolm will join Ernest in the finals of the 400-meter run after a time of 57.89 seconds today, the fourth best on the day.

Senior Asher Kyger placed second in the preliminary round of the 800-meter run. She will advance to the finals on a time of 2:14.82 in today’s race.

Alexandria Oembler was the top finisher for the Bears in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 60-meter dash, advancing to tomorrow’s finals in both events. In the hurdles, Oembler set a personal best with her time of 8.67 seconds. In the 60-meter dash, she tied her personal best of 7.74 seconds.

Shantel Llewellyn and Corteneé Boulard also advanced to the 60-meter dash finals. Both ran a time of 7.75 seconds in the event.

Shawnté Middlebrook placed eighth in the finals of the long jump. Her distance of 5.61 meters (18-05.00 feet) scored another point for the Bears.

Jeláni Kelly set a personal best in the weight throw. Her distance of 14.45 meters (47-05.00 feet) was more than three feet farther than her previous best. She finished 14th in the event.

The final day of the MVC Indoor Championships will be on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The day’s events begin at 10:30 a.m.
